Coming Out!
When, How & Why!
Coming out is an important process for most members of the GLBT community. For many, coming out is the last essential validation of their sexuality, a way to finally stop feeling like their sexual preference is something shameful they have to hide under their beds. Coming out gives many that final licence to live their lives the way they want to. But before you come out, you should really think about it. Think about what coming out means to you, how it will effect your life, and how important it is to you. Once you have thought about it and are positive you want to, then it's time to plan out how to do it.
Many people think that they should reveal their sexuality to their whole family in a large family event, but I do not recommend doing this. While this will get the news out to your entire family, doing so in such a public manner will probably make them feel somewhat embarrassed, and their response is likely to be much less ideal if you come out in this manner. Instead, consult your loved ones in way that is more personal, such as face to face, or on the phone.
When you tell them the news, be sure to prepare yourself for the worst. Even if you are sure that they will be okay with it, it is best to prepare yourself for the worst before hand, so it doesn't take you off guard. Hopefully your family and friends will be understanding, but you must remember that this is not always the case.
The best way to come out is to simply state it. Do not throw it into a normal conversation. Brace your relatives, and tell them about your sexuality in a matter of fact manner. The more self confidence and assurance you show, the more likely it is that they will be accepting. And if they are not accepting at first, chances are they may just need to adapt to it, and eventually things will be normal again. If not, remember that it isn't the end of the world. Being comfortable with yourself is most important thing.
